Identity drift is the first structural failure that occurs when a founder operates from an unintentional identity within an unintentional architecture.
Drift is not emotional.
Drift is not psychological.
Drift is not a crisis of confidence.
Drift is the incremental misalignment between the founder’s actual identity and the identity required to survive the architecture they built.
It is slow.
It is quiet.
It is cumulative.
And it is always structural.
I. Drift as Structural Misalignment
Founders believe they are adapting.
They believe they are evolving.
They believe they are “doing what’s necessary.”
In reality, they are drifting — abandoning their actual identity in favor of the persona required to sustain an unsound system.
Drift is the internal version of collapse.
It begins with small concessions:
